Mileage Forecast: More Earning Opportunities, More Burning Headaches

Happy New Year to all our readers. Last year was an eventful one for the industry, and for FrequentFlier.com. And 2007 should be the same.

The holidays are behind us. Hopefully our mileage-savvy readers took advantage of the bonuses on offer for Christmas shopping at many of the airline and hotel mileage malls. It was a good opportunity for mileage collectors to pump up their frequent flyer program accounts.

Which raises the inevitable question: What to do with those extra miles? The short answer: Redeem them for free trips between New Year's and Memorial Day, when travel demand is soft and award seats are more readily available.

If you're still in search of worthy New Year's resolutions, here's one that should be at the top of every frequent traveler's list: focus. Pick a single program and earn miles exclusively with companies which award miles in that program.

Fly the airline which hosts the program, or other airlines with partnership status. Patronize participating hotels and rental car companies. Shop for holiday gifts at the program's mileage mall (the network of online retailers which award miles for purchases). And charge those gifts on the credit card affiliated with that program to earn even more miles.

By this time next year, you'll have earned elite status and banked enough miles for a free trip during the off season.

Thanks for flying with us. We know you have a choice of loyalty program newsletters and pledge to keep you informed, entertained and motivated over the course of the coming year.

Fasten your seatbelts...

FrequentFlier Forum Topics

As always, there's plenty of activity on the FrequentFlier Forum.

In the "Hotel Programs" Forum, Jennifer was a Platinum elite member of Hyatt's program when she booked a Passport Plus award stay. "Now I just found out that Hyatt will not be granting me Platinum status in 2007. Can I just show up at the hotel where I have already redeemed my points even though I won't be Platinum any longer? I redeemed the points and claimed the reward while I was Platinum."

Also In the "Hotel Programs" Forum, QF WP has updated his handy listing of Priority Club promotions.

And much more. Questions, answers? Post them to the Forum!

More Delta Elite Miles for Charges

Beginning January 1, 2007, holders of the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card from American Express can earn up to 20,000 elite-qualifying miles (EQMs) per calendar year.

Cardholders earn 10,000 EQMs after spending $25,000 during the year, and an additional 10,000 EQMs for reaching the $50,000 mark.

In addition to upping the potential EQM earnings from 10,000 to 20,000, the new policy changes the earning period from the 12-month period beginning with the payment of the card's annual fee to the calendar year.

As is typically the case with EQM promotions, this is good news-bad news for SkyMiles members. For true frequent flyers who already earn elite status the old-fashioned way, viz. by flying, this will mean more elites competing for the few available upgrade seats. For frequent buyers, on the other hand, the new policy puts elite status and perks within fairly easy reach.

Feedback from the Frontlines of Travel

"Thanks for our FF newsletter. I'm interested to know if I can transfer frequent flier miles from AA to United." [Kim]

[FrequentFlier.com replies - Mileage exchange -- can you, should you -- is one of the questions we receive most frequently. We'll put up a comprehensive guide to such exchanges in the coming months. For now: Yes, there is a round-about way to convert American miles to United miles.

To do so, first join Hilton HHonors if you're not already a member. Then, using the HHonors Reward Exchange function, convert American miles into HHonors points. The exchange rate: 5,000 American miles equals 10,000 HHonors points. Next, convert those HHonors points for United miles. In that exchange, 10,000 HHonors points nets 1,000 United miles.

If you began with 5,000 American miles, you would find yourself with 1,000 United miles after the two-step process is completed -- a loss of 80% of the original amount.

That's a high price to pay for the convenience. But if those American miles are "orphan miles" languishing in an inactive account, it's better to convert them than lose them.]
