Welcome B-a-a-a-a-a-c-k
============================
Welcome back to the Crier and the tumultuous world of travel, miles and points.
This issue's news is a mixed bag. There are signs of improvement among the airlines' Dec. traffic reports. And we are being treated to systemwide double-mile offers from Delta and US Airways, the country's 3rd and 6th largest carriers. But in a major setback for frequent flyers in Canada, Air Canada has downsized its mileage payout for advance-purchase intra-Canada flights.
It's a new year... here's hoping it will be a better one.
The Pulse of Travel: December Airline Results
=======================================
Just in time for this first issue of the new year, the largest North America airlines have released traffic data for Dec., giving us a sense of their post-9/11 recovery progress.
| Dec. 2001 vs. 2000 |
Airline |
Passenger Traffic |
Air Canada |
-2.5% |
AirTran |
+5.2% |
| Alaska |
-5.1% |
| American |
-17.4% |
| America West |
-15.0% |
| Continental |
-10.6% |
| Delta |
-9.8% |
| Northwest |
-11.3% |
Southwest |
+0.6%
|
United |
-18.1%
|
| US Airways |
-22.0%
|
While the numbers aren't likely to trigger an outbreak of exuberance, irrational or otherwise, there is a kernel of good news here. During Nov. (see http://frequentflier.com/ffc-120501.htm), traffic declines for most of the largest carriers exceeded 20% year-over-year. The Dec. shortfalls came in at less than 20%.
If you can't decide whether to cheer the airlines on or jeer them off, you're not alone in your ambivalence: As travel consumers, we have contradictory interests. On the on hand, the airlines' desperation translates into lower fares and more aggressive mileage offers. On the other hand, if the travel slump doesn't abate soon, the weaker airlines will be driven into bankruptcy, resulting in industry consolidation, higher fares and less compelling frequent-flyer promotions.
It's now time to begin rooting for, and contributing to, the airlines' recovery.

You must pre-register for both offers, as follows:

Air Canada Slashes Miles
===========================
Condolences to our neighbors to the north...
Apparently emboldened by its near-monopoly status, Air Canada has reduced significantly the miles awarded for intra-Canada flights. Effective Jan. 1, 2002, Air Canada and Air Canada Regional flights within Canada and between Canada and the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Bermuda earn miles at the following rates:
Booking Class |
Base Miles Awarded |
Class of Service Bonus |
J |
100% of miles flown minimum of 500 miles |
25% |
C or Y |
100% of miles flown minimum of 500 miles |
n/a |
M, B, T, H, V |
75% of miles flown minimum of 375 miles |
n/a |
Q, L, N, E, G, I, K, O, R, U |
35% of miles flown minimum of 175 miles |
n/a |
Under the new scheme, Aeroplan members will only earn actual flight miles for the most expensive fares, those typically only purchased for business travel. The discounted fares used for the vast majority of travel will earn only 35% or 75% of the actually flown miles.

Kellogg's AAdvantage Rule Changes
======================================
"The Kellogg/American Airline 100 mile coupon promotion is having significant rule changes effective 1/1/02. The biggest issue is that from now on, 100 mile coupons can not be submitted in batches larger than 10 coupons at a time, and must be mailed in an "envelope. Certificates received in packages and/or boxes will not be processed or returned." Also, a 200k mile limit per year per account has been added: http://www.kelloggs.com/
"I found no mention of these changes on AA.com and the AA customer service desk did not seem to know of the change yet."
- Greg
Until next week...
