"In response to Tina's comments [in last week's Crier] about luggage problems in Newark, I had a bizarre experience in August flying out of JFK on JetBlue.
"It was a nonstop flight to Sacramento, leaving JFK at about 7 p.m. Due to the inexplicably late arrival of the limousine service picking me up in Stamford, CT for the trip to JFK and horrendous traffic all the way, I barely made it to JFK in time for the flight. BUT the flight was delayed for over an hour. So you would think they would have time to get my one suitcase to the plane. They didn't. It showed up the next night on the same flight, and they delivered it to my home that night. My advice to Tina: if it's essential to have your luggage when you get off the plane, pack light and carry it onboard with you. Or ship it ahead. It seems impossible to count on luggage delivery these days - even on a nonstop flight." [Susan - Davis, CA]
"US Airways and Bank of America are working together to promote frequent flyer Visa cards on their flights. They promise a free ticket for filling out the application and sending it in. I applied and got one of their cards.
"I found out that only 5K miles instead of 25,000 miles as promised, was posted to the account by checking my balance. I called the bank and was initially told that I had to talk to US Airways. So, I talked to US Airways today, and they said it was up to Bank of America to deposit the miles in my account.
"I talked to the bank a second time, and was told the following: You did not qualify for a 'signature card' so we issued a lower ranked card which only gave you five thousand miles. Now this is curious since I once had a ten thousand dollar cash account which I paid off last year. NO credit problem with it whatsoever, although when I went to pay it off, they raised my interest rate to 25%. Incredible.
"I escalated my complaint about the switch as far as I could go, and was basically told, tough. I have had no response from US Air as to the problem. I might also add, that the airline attendants push these applications very hard during the flight saying that they need the fifty dollars they get in order to live. US Air does not pay them enough according to their statements on the flight. The actual application says in big bold letters, 25,000 miles for filling in this application and having a credit card issued. I am told that somewhere in the fine print there is a warning that a lower card may be issued. Certainly when the new card came, there was NO notice of it not being the card I applied for... There was no specific warning on the application about 5K vs 25k or I would not have submitted the application.
"It amazes me that BofA can buy a defunct mortgage company, Countrywide, for multi-millions but needs to keep my fifty bucks. Very sad indeed." [Bruce S.]
"My daughters, husband and I went on a trip abroad in November to England. The girls flew Delta and Virgin Airlines. We flew nonstop from LAX to London on American airlines.
"Our problem is that both airlines have not credited us with our miles. We have submitted requests to both, but nothing is happening. Who do we complain to? Is this a game that airlines play now to keep from rewarding points? Delta wants boarding passes which neither of our daughters saved. Don't they have computer records? We are very frustrated right now and hoped you would know how to help us.
"Thanks so much!" [J.B.]
[FrequentFlier.com replies - Retroactive credit claims can take weeks, sometimes months, to post. It might help expedite the process if you were to call the airlines' frequent flyer customer service centers to request a status report on their progress.]
Until next week...
