UP FRONT

And the Winners Are...

Throughout April, we were promoting a sweepstakes to promote sales of the "Mileage Pro - The Insider's Guide to Frequent Flyer Programs" book.

The final day to enter was May 4, and the winners have been chosen.

Elisa Verhille of Chicago, IL won the Briggs & Riley Travelware 20" Upright Business Traveler (retail $369).

And Donna Alcott of New York, NY won the Briggs & Riley Travelware Compact Rolling Case (retail $259).

Congratulations to Elisa and Donna!

Bankruptcy Watch

The results of voting by Delta's pilots have been tallied and were announced today: the pilots have ratified a new contract, effective June 1, which will save the airline $280 million annually in salary and benefit expenses. In accepting the concessions, the pilots have eliminated the worrisome specter of a strike, which could have forced the airline to permanently cease operations.

Just hours after the vote, the judge overseeing Delta's bankruptcy reorganization approved the new agreement.

FrequentFlier Forum Topics

As always, there's plenty of activity on the FrequentFlier Forum.

In the "Airline Programs" Forum, Flatline is wondering about the mechanics of upgrades: "On a recent Northwest flight, I was lucky enough to be upgraded to first class (I'm currently at the silver elite level). I happened to check in on-line for this flight almost exactly 24 hours in advance (23:59 or something close). I know there were several other silver elite passenger also hoping for an upgrade. This got me thinking, how exactly is the waiting list for first class upgrades prioritized?"

Also in the "Airline Programs" Forum, Sean McC poses a refreshingly back-to-basics question: "I am recently arrived in the USA from Ireland will be here for a year and will be taking a number of internal flights during the year. Which would be a good program. Are you obligated to use any one airline or can you switch between different airlines or is there a program that will reward you whichever airline you use or if you switch between airlines?"

And much more. Questions, answers? Post them to the Forum!

MILES & POINTS

Alaska Allows Mileage Transfers

Members of Alaska Air's Mileage Plan may now transfer miles from their own accounts into the accounts of other Mileage Plan members.

At a cost of $0.01 per mile, plus a $25 processing fee per transaction, miles can be transferred in increments of 1,000 miles, up to 30,000 miles.

A maximum of 100,000 miles can be transferred into any individual Mileage Plan account per calendar year; and up to 100,000 miles can be deducted from a Mileage Plan account per calendar year.

From the standpoint of the mileage owner, the ability to transfer miles to someone else is clearly a desirable convenience, adding somewhat to the miles' value. And it comes as no surprise that convenience comes at a price. The question is whether $0.01 per mile on top of the $25 processing fee is the right price.

American's 25 Deals in 25 Days - Final Day

To mark the 25th anniversary of the program's launch, American has announced a new AAdvantage promotion, award discount or travel sweepstakes on each of the first 25 days of May.

We reported on the first 24 days' offers in previous weeks. For the historical record, following is the final offer in the promotion, which ended on May 25.

Day 25 - Register (on May 25 ONLY) to become eligible to earn 2.5 times the AAdvantage miles normally awarded through the AAdvantage Dining program through June 30.

The promotion was fun and lucrative -- two qualities not often associated with airline mileage programs these days. Kudos to American for injecting a modicum of surprise and delight back into the game, albeit only temporarily.

Greenpoints Increases Earnings for E-Shopping

It's been a long time since we had any reason to mention greenpoints.com, the digital successor to what many consider the first fully developed loyalty program, Green Stamps. But the latest development is a newsworthy one.

Until further notice, purchases at approximately 125 participating online retailers will earn 20 points per $1 spent, double the previous earning rate. Offline purchases remain at the 10-points-per-$1 rate.

For now, this is being positioned as a promotion without a set termination date. That's typically a way of testing what is expected to become a permanent program change without actually committing to it.

As with the airlines' mileage malls, be sure to begin shopping at the greenpoints.com site to insure that earnings are tracked and credited.

Northwest Cutting Cord to Sprint Nextel

We reported last week on opportunities to earn Northwest miles for T-Mobile service. Which raised the question: What's the status of Northwest's relationship with Sprint Nextel?

Answer: It's being phased out. Here's the official announcement:

Effective June 1, Sprint Nextel will cease enrollment of any new customers into the NWA WorldPerks/Sprint Nextel Program. Members who purchased and activated a new Sprint PCS or Nextel wireless phone with a two-year service agreement prior to June 1, 2006, will continue to earn the Bonus Miles due them as long as they enroll for the program at www.nextel.com/partnerawards no later than July 31, 2006.

Feedback from the Frontlines of Travel

""Is it possible to exchange United Mileage plus frequent flier miles for a rental car anywhere?" [Judy B.]

[FrequentFlier.com replies - Not unless you're an elite member of Mileage Plus or have used the Mileage Plus credit card extensively over the past five months. United recently added car rentals to an enhanced version of the award chart exclusively for Premier and 1K members. Our best guess is that United will extend the hotel and rental car awards to non-elite program members at some point, but there's no telling when that might happen. Also, if you use the Mileage Plus credit card, any miles earned for charges since January 2006 can be redeemed for car rentals. But in the short time since that change, most consumers aren't likely to have charged enough to qualify for awards.]

"Got to your website by trying to find info on dated airmiles to N.O. (New Orleans) to help Hurricane Relief victims.

"Do you know of anyway I can collect free miles? I am a leader of a church team in Mass. that is getting ready to make a third trip to N.O. to help victims. The flights are getting costly and are preventing some people from joining. As for me, I am bringing my husband this time, as he is a carpenter. This means no income for a week. But he is too talented to not take advantage of his skills." [Gina G.]

[FrequentFlier.com replies - It's difficult for individuals and small groups to secure frequent flyer mile donations. While the airlines do facilitate donations to charitable organizations, their efforts principally target larger national operations such as the Red Cross and the American Heart Association. The best source of information and advice on this subject is http://miledonor.com/.]
