This Week's Travel Industry Newsbites

For the tens of millions of frequent travelers vested in the programs of the major airlines, this has been a week of good news: positive developments of positively heart-stirring proportions.

Three of the shakiest legacy carriers -- Delta, US Airways and United -- made moves critical to their long-term survival, confounding the legions of analysts who had predicted that 1 or more of the nation's largest airlines was bound for the scrapheap of commercial aviation history.

On Tuesday, at the very last moment, United managed to avert the threat of a strike by its largest union, the International Association of Machinists, which could have grounded the airline just as the critical summer travel season took wing. The news of the tentative agreement between United and the machinists came on the same day that the mechanics union announced that a new contract had been ratified by its members.

Quite against the odds, United may be cleared for take-off.

In a significant boost for the prospects of the America West-US Airways merger, investment advisor Wellington Management of Boston has agreed to invest $150 million in the new company.

This latest commitment brings the financing to $500 million -- enough to fund the merger and US Airways' exit from bankruptcy.

Good news was also forthcoming from Delta, with the announcement that it had renegotiated terms of its line of credit with GE. Bottom line: the relaxation of selected liquidity requirements means that Delta is likely to get through the remainder of 2005 without a bankruptcy filing.

FrequentFlier Forum Topics

As always, there's plenty of activity on the FrequentFlier Forum.

In the "Airline Programs" Forum, flynut poses a question weighing on the minds of many Mileage Plus members: "If I book an award ticket through the UA Star Alliance Awards on LH (Lufthansa) and UA (United) folds before the date of travel, would LH honor the ticket?"

In the "Hotel Programs" Forum, cduff is waiting for airline miles earned for a hotel stay: "For stays at Hilton, how long does it normally take to post to the corresponding frequent flyer program (Delta in my case)?"

In the "Credit Card Programs" Forum, kcw is considering trading in a co-branded airline credit card for a bank travel-rewards card: "I have been using an AMEX Delta Skymiles card for years now, but am thinking of switching to an MBNA World Points card because I am fed up with the Delta FF program. With Delta FF, I can never get the flights I want, on the days I want, etc. Besides not getting the dates I want, the flights that I do get are usually with ridiculous connections, etc."

And much more. Questions, answers? Post them to the Forum!

FREQUENTFLIER FITNESS

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too
Provided by Healthy Travel Network (http://www.healthytravelnetwork.com)

I never buy desserts for home, so the best part of eating out for me is. sweets! Practice our wise tips, and you can treat yourself to an occasional treat.

Make your treat worthwhile. Get a great dessert at a great restaurant. Don't blow it on candy at the airport.

Ask to see the dessert tray so that you can assess portion sizes before ordering.

Skip the ice cream, whip cream, and sauces, and forgo an after dinner drink. Ask for skim or low fat milk and artificial sweetener for your coffee.

Split one dessert between everyone at the table.

If ordering alone, ask for a half portion. Tell them to give the other half to one of the servers.

Put your fork down in between bites. Wait 60 seconds before taking another bit.

Don't clean your plate.

And above all else, enjoy!

READER RANTS & RAVES

Feedback from the Frontlines of Travel

"Are you aware that United has created a two-tiered structure for their award travel? The "saver" category, for fewer miles, seems to contain only red-eyes. The "standard" category (everything else) costs twice as many miles per ticket. The r/t coast to coast flights I just booked cost 40k miles. In effect, they've diminished the value of Mileage Plus miles by 50 percent. Still, with the shape United is in, I thought I better fly before my miles become worthless altogether.

"Keep up the good work." (Susan - Davis, CA)

[Editor's Note - The so-called unrestricted awards have been with us for several years. With restricted awards harder than ever to obtain, more program members are being forced to redeem at the higher unrestricted levels. As we've argued here, that amounts to an unpublished increase in award levels, since the average number of miles redeemed for an award ticket is being forced higher.]

"This writer had accumulated many frequent flier miles on several airlines, including 89,052 miles on Delta, one of the airlines mentioned in today's Wall Street Journal.

"I will not bore you with a lengthy dissertation but I had colon cancer in 2000 and spent much of 2001 and 2002 in hospitals and rehab. During that period Delta reduced my mileage to 14,182 because the time for usage had expired.

"I explained the extenuating circumstances which caused the time to expire in two letters neither of which have been answered.

"I realize there is nothing to be done about their policy but every rule has exceptions. Their heartless treatment will keep me off Delta in the future and may be a contributing factor in their existing problems.

"I am only boring you with this because it is what you do and I hope in some small way it helps you in your analysis of airlines." (George B. - Westlake Village, CA)

[Editor's Note - Airlines have considerable discretion in these matters. And the specifics of this situation may well warrant an exception. Don't give up hope yet.]

"Flew SONG for the first time yesterday. LOVED the real-time TV. Made the flights to/from TPA and BOS so much more enjoyable.

"If SONG and JetBlue can have real-time TV, why can't the big carriers follow suit?" (Marva - St. Pete, FL)

[Editor's Note - SONG and JetBlue also offer more legroom, on average, than do their "full service" counterparts. Such disconnects are both cause and effect of the industry's current troubles.]

"I recently checked a fare from the east coast to the west coast on Orbitz.

"If I booked it thru Orbitz as a Northwest flight it was $100 dollars less than if I booked on Delta or even on Delta.com. All of the flights were on Delta not northwest.

"If you don't believe me check it out. PHL to SNA, 10/14 return 10/21. So fly Northwest instead of Delta. Can anyone explain this? Why can Orbitz sell a Northwest ticket on Delta flights cheaper than they can sell the exact same flights thru Delta." (John)

[Editor's Note - These are undoubtedly code-shares, where Northwest sells seats on a Delta-operated flight as though it were a NW flight. Although it may be counter-intuitive, it's not unusual to see the second carrier undercut the prices offered by the airline actually operating the flight. In any case, it has nothing to do with Orbitz... they're simply posting the fares the airlines have authorized them to offer.]

Until next week...
