"What is FIFA?"
============================

Thanks to the many soccer-savvy readers who took time to answer the "What is FIFA?" question posed in last week's newsletter. The answer:

"Your question is interesting because, for me, as a Brazilian, it sounds just like if you were asking what Super Bowl is or what UNO, UNESCO, IATA stands for... but I understand that. Different cultures...

"FIFA stands for International Football Federation Association, not in English but in French. Federation Internationale de Football Association. It was founded in 1904 in Paris but its present headquarters are in Zurich, Switzerland. However, if you go to Lausanne, you cannot absolutely miss the Football museum. By the way, when we say football, we refer to what Americans call soccer. What Americans call football we refer as American Football, completely unknown and beyond comprehension under the Equator and Europe."

- Bruno (writing from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

VirtualBellhop Takes Bags Out of Travel Equation
====================================

If you want to take the 'lug' out of luggage, VirtualBellhop makes it possible to fly with just a carry-on. Your bags are picked up by a VBH courier a day or 2 before you leave and shipped to arrive at your destination before you do.

A recent Wall Street Journal article compared VBH with Airborne, FedEx, UPS and another competitive service and found VBH to be superior overall.

Cost: $40 and up, depending on weight, distance, type of service. Not cheap. But the convenience factor might make it worthwhile.

[Thanks to Julia for the recommendation.]

Sometimes it DOES Take a Rocket Scientist
====================================

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of air-liners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's backrest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow. The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the U.S. scientists for suggestions.

NASA responded with a one-line memo: "Defrost the chicken."

[Thanks to Dana for sharing this.]

Until next week...
