More Alliance Chatter (AF, KL, NW)
==================================

As expected, on Thursday of last week, Air France and KLM signed an agreement to merge, subject to approval by the various governments and regulatory bodies concerned.

So the stage is set for a significant bulking up of the SkyTeam alliance, with the forthcoming addition of Continental, Northwest and KLM, as we've been predicting.

What's surprising is the lackadasical pace at which Northwest, at least, is moving in that direction. Here's what Northwest chief Doug Steenland had to say on the subject: "With respect to SkyTeam, we would anticipate at the earliest we would look to join that global alliance in the summer or fall of 2004."

Dollars and Sense
==========================

Financial results for the airlines' summer season, Jul 1. - Sept. 30, have been trickling in over the past week.

The overall picture is encouraging, with a number of carriers making dramatic swings from losses in last year's 3rd quarter to profits in 2003.

There is cause for concern. US Air in particular has to be singled out for special scrutiny. In spite of their apparent success in reorganizing and emerging from bankruptcy protection in very short order, and against the backdrop of widespread profitability industrywide, the best they could do was a $90 million loss for the quarter. That does not bode well for their long-term survival.

Here's what we know so far:
