More Promotions; the U.S.-Europe Connection
============================

This week: more hotel promotions. And on the airline side, Delta ups the ante by extending its double-mile offer through Dec. 15. As we go to press, American has matched, but so far no official word from the other U.S. carriers. See "Miles & Points" section below.

Interesting development: British Airways and KLM are reportedly in discussions regarding a merger or strategic alliance. (BA chief Rod Eddington expects that Europe's aviation industry will be forced to downsize from 15 major carriers to 3: Air France, BA and Lufthansa.) A BA-KLM marriage would have a significant, if unintended, impact on U.S. aviation, potentially leaving Northwest without its global alliance partner, KLM, which would likely redirect its allegiance to the competing alliance anchored by BA and American.
