Independence Air Flies Into Twilight Zone

On Monday, Dulles-based discount carrier Independence Air joined United, ATA, Delta, Northwest and Mesaba under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

While consumers have come to accept airline bankruptcies as a fact of travel life, this one is different and calls for decisive action by Independence customers to hedge against the risk of losing their frequent flyer points.

Unlike the recent Chapter 11 filings of Delta and Northwest, Independence's filing is widely seen as a step toward wholesale liquidation. The carrier has already cut back its services substantially in an unsuccessful attempt to reach profitability. What remains is a shrunken company with a demonstrably flawed business model -- hardly an attractive investment opportunity or take-over target.

If Independence Air is eventually forced to sell itself off piecemeal, it's very unlikely that another airline would be interested in acquiring iClub, Independence's mileage program. Program members would probably find themselves left empty-handed.

So, while we've advised members of other frequent flyer programs to sit tight after their airlines declared bankruptcy, our advice to iClub members has to be different: iClub members should redeem their points and use them for award travel within the next two months.

Better safe than sorry.

FrequentFlier Forum Topics

As always, there's plenty of activity on the FrequentFlier Forum.

In the "Airline Programs" Forum, FlierMan wonders as follows: "I'll be 9,000 miles short of getting Platinum at American this year. Any ideas how to get there spending the least $? (aside from a trip to Hawaii)." Great replies from Mike (nako) and Michael (radiogod).

Also in the "Airline Programs" Forum, girlshooo's return flight from Santiago, Chile on American was cancelled. AA rebooked her on a Delta flight. But will she still receive her AAdvantage miles (including her Plat elite bonus)? And what about her upgrade...?

And much more. Questions, answers? Post them to the Forum!

Delta to Cut Free Lounge Memberships for Top Elites

Beginning in 2007, Delta customers will have one less reason to pursue top-tier elite status: Platinum Medallion members will no longer receive complimentary Crown Room Club memberships.

Instead, Platinum Medallions will be offered lounge memberships at discounted rates -- a one-time rate of $125 for PM members who earned Platinum status in 2006 and who qualified again in 2007; and $250 for members who earned PM status for 2007 but were not PM members in 2006.

As a business case, this is a classic example of the always-difficult choice between chasing the loyalty effect (long term and hard to quantify) and the revenue effect (short term and more measurable). Predictably for a company in bankruptcy, Delta chose the latter at the expense of the former.

My sense is that, as much as Delta needs to shore up revenues, this isn't the time for lowest-common-denominator marketing. Excitement and loyalty go hand in hand. But with the forthcoming deep-sixing of low-fare Song and the termination of free lounge access for Platinum Medallions, Delta and excitement will go their separate ways.

Feedback from the Frontlines of Travel

"Where/how do I express my frustration with Continental Airlines? I have been a faithful Continental Frequent Flyer. Even before 9/11, I kept an elite level. After 9/11 I kept flying and usually with Continental and encouraged my friends to do likewise. Right now four of us, who regularly travel together have enough miles for four Business Class tickets to Spain -- in via Barcelona and out via Lisbon. I requested these tickets way in advance to beat the crowds some time in September. I have been put on a "wait list" until the regular mileage levels "clear." I can get these tickets now at the outrageous "Any Time" rates -- basically double the normal 90,000 miles for Europe.

"I realize that Continental is struggling and gas prices are outrageous, yet I am a Continental Elite Flyer. They call their program "reward travel." I do not consider it a reward, when I am being charged double the normal rate. Is Continental shooting itself in the foot by this hostile treatment of its fans." [Rev. Michael W. C. - Saint Leo, FL]

"You should check it out and frankly it's disgusting what American Airlines (AA) has been doing recently. If you log onto their website AA.com and look for fares overseas to areas like "their big new promo" KIX (Osaka), NRT (Narita), or NGO (Nagoya), you will see decent fares less taxes, fees and the illegal fuel surcharge (don't we pay for fuel inside the original fare?) but ZERO FREQUENT FLIER MILES!! One has to read and check the "detailed fare rules" and see the booking code. And it's not as if the link to view them stares the buyer in the face, it's a small "fine print" link only available if one prices out the itinerary at purchase time. And they are all in "O"!! Which means, zero frequent flyer miles and they are all over the place. It looks like "Scooter" Libby is working at American Airlines for the moment. I wonder how long it will last, or maybe it's a way to keep the AAdvantage frequent fliers from buying tickets so they, the airline themselves can go into bankruptcy to "compete" with bankrupt Northwest, bankrupt US Airways, bankrupt United Airlines, bankrupt Delta, and anyone else that is bankrupt I may have left out. American Airlines used to really be proud of their frequent flier program, including catch phrases like 'every fare booked on AA.com earns frequent flyer miles.'

"Well, not anymore. The "O" fare, if flown internationally will earn zero, count them, zero AAdvantage frequent flyer miles. And that's a 6000 mile trip one way with horrific food, surly and elderly flight attendants, uncomfortable seats, bathrooms never cleaned and sprayed, a sad state of affairs. Without the FF Miles, what allegiance to this flag carrier do they expect? Under God? If ever there was a time for elites to shop around to other airlines, this apparently is what American Airlines wants them to do.

"I bet even "Jenkins" (their new advertising promotion) will not fly it." [Al from Boston]

Until next week...
