'Tis the Season for Mileage Mall Bonuses

How much are you planning to spend on gifts before the end of the year?

Between now and the close of 2007, billions will be spent on holiday shopping. And in the process of buying those Barbies and PlayStations and Cuisinarts, shoppers will earn more airline miles and hotel points for their purchases than ever before.

Most of those miles will be earned by shopping at the mileage malls now operated in conjunction with all the larger airline and hotel programs. Typically comprising a hundred or more online merchants, the malls allow program members to earn one or more miles for every dollar spent at the participating retailers.

And just as Main Street malls trot out discounts and other incentives to entice holiday shoppers, so do the mileage malls ratchet up their mileage offerings at this time of year. To help you make the most of the mileage deals on offer, following is an overview of the seasonal promotions currently in place from selected airline and hotel programs.

FrequentFlier Forum Topics

As always, there's plenty of activity on the FrequentFlier Forum.

In the "Airline Programs" Forum, Dr. J. may have discovered a new way to extend the life of miles: "I recently booked an award with United's Mileage Plus, but then didn't ticket it within the required 3 days, so the miles went back into my account. But, as a side effect, I noticed these actions extended my 18month expiration date. Has anyone else noticed this? It was a nice little unexpected benefit, but then after reading their rules, I guess booking-then-canceling is an activity in my account."

Also in the "Airline Programs" Forum, toddlok shares details and a link to a returning United mileage offer: up to 20,000 miles for booking multiple United Vacations packages (more in "Miles & Points" below).

Feedback from the Frontlines of Travel

"It's surprising to me that there isn't more discussion of the Delta change, putting restrictions on their rule buster awards (SkyChoice as they call it). No, let me say that differently, it shocks me.

"I've been flying for over 30 years and have been involved with the airline mileage programs since they began. For much of that time I have been a Delta customer, obviously a SkyMiles member as well. Delta has become a shell of its former self in many ways. But this latest slap in the face is the worst insult yet to folks like me who have kept the faith. Sad." [Floyd R.]
